The Barnes Foundation on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway houses an awe-inspiring collection featuring 181 Renoirs, 69 Czannes and 59 Matisses, along with works by Manet, Degas, Seurat, Prendergrast, Titian, Picasso and so much more.

This summer, though, visitors to the Barnes can experience a curated view of the works of post-impressionist Paul Czanne (1839-1906) at the Barnes Foundation, too.

As of Sunday, June 22, the remarkable permanent collection will be complemented by a landmark temporary exhibition of the groundbreaking still lifes by the post-impressionist painter in The World Is an Apple: The Still Lifes of Paul Czanne.

Experience a rare view of works by the "Master of Aix" in this exhibition featuring 21 paintings by the artist ranging from his early paintings to his late works.

The World Is an Apple: The Still Lifes of Paul Czanne officially opens Sunday, June 22 at the Barnes' Parkway home, and will remain on view in the special exhibitions gallery through September 22.

The Exhibition

 
Even if you know very little about art, it's difficult to separate the idea of still lifes from the artist Paul Cezanne.

Often playing with colors, forms and perspective, Czanne established a distinctive style to his still lifes with themes ranging from apples and flowers to — somewhat shockingly — skulls.

Also on view at The Barnes Foundation is Paul Czanne's The Kitchen Table or La Table de cuisine. (Painting on loan from Muse d'Orsay, Paris, RF 2819)

The World Is an Apple paints a picture of the thematic and chronological sweep of Czanne's still-life painting, showing Czanne's monumental achievement in the genre.

The exhibition features 16 still lifes from the Barnes Foundation's permanent collection in addition to pieces on loan from public and private collections including the National Gallery, Muse d'Orsay and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

As the only U.S. stop and the premiere of this exceptional exhibition, art lovers should make plans now to visit the Barnes this summer.
 

Special Events

 
To celebrate the grand opening of this remarkable exhibition, the foundation hosts a grand soiree on Saturday, June 21 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Be among the first to see The World Is an Apple: The Still Lifes of Paul Czanne by attending the after-hours Preview Party.

For a $25 ticket, guests can take in the exhibition, enjoy cocktails on the now-open terrace, and hear live music from Kathryn Guthrie, the Jasper String Quartet and accordionist Joseph Soprani.

Tickets for the opening party are available online.

Come First Friday, August 1, an evening gallery-going event welcomes guests to hear Relche New Music Ensemble and electronic artist Peter Price musically interpret Czanne's still lifes, listen to talk on Czanne's influence and more.

Admittance to the special exhibition is free with price of admission into the gallery or to any event, and tickets are available for the special exhibition only, as well.

Timed, ticketed admission is available for reservation online, and advance booking is highly recommended.

The Barnes' incredible collection of post-Impressionist and early-modern paintings is worth the trip alone, but with a special exhibition on view, visitation is practically mandatory.
