Threat to Giant Sequoia Trees in California

Who hasn't had a secret crush on a tree? The Earth's lungs, their beauty is hard to surpass. Its rare, though, that we get to make our arbor love public. Unless you're living in Melbourne, Australia.

Urban planners wanted to protect the city's 70,000 Eucalyptus, oaks, and elms. To do this, they assigned each tree its own email address. The idea was that then people could easily report damage from storms or broken branches.

What the Melbourne city services crew didn't expect was the love people across Melbourne would profess to the trees.

Full of adoration, tree after tree started getting emails like this one:

My dearest Ulmus,

As I was leaving St. Mary's College today I was struck, not by a branch, but by your radiant beauty. You must get these messages all the time. You're such an attractive tree.

And this one:

Dear 1037148,

You deserve to be known by more than a number. I love you. Always and forever.

A brilliant email, was written by the tree itself:

How y'all?

My name is Quercus Alba. Y'all can call me Al. I'm about 350 years old and live on a small farm in N.E. Mississippi, USA. I'm about 80 feet tall, with a trunk girth of about 16 feet. I don't travel much (actually haven't moved since I was an acorn). I just stand around and provide a perch for local birds and squirrels.

Have good day,
Al

The city's Environment Chairman, Arron Wood (how perfect), said he loved the surprise the email campaign birthed.

Other cities have similar email campaigns where they have citizens report everything from potholes to flooding but this is the first one on the globe to generate such love-filled emails.

Trees, you're dreamy.
